Lib Dem policy regarding Pensioner poverty

The Liberal Democratic Party in the United Kingdom believes that the government is not doing enough to combat the increasing amount of pensioner poverty. The Lib Dems have put together proposals to simplify the tax code and improve the National Health insurance system. They are also working on how to address the issue of pensioner poverty.

Part of the issue is that, with the current tax code, pensioners can claim benefit on their taxes with a pension credit much like the child tax credit. Although the Labour Party thought that pensioners would jump at the chance to take the deduction, the reality is that 40% of pensioners are failing to claim the credit. The money being left on the table by the pensioners amounts to somewhere between 300 and 400 million pounds; this could be used to benefit the pensioners in other ways. If the benefit was used for all pensioners then those who claim the tax credit wouldn’t lose their benefit, they would just receive it by different means. The Liberal Democrats do not believe that all pensioners can be reached with the pension tax credit, and so are advocating an alternate payment system. The other problem with state pensions is that the pension benefit is not keeping up with inflation, and pensioners are struggling to live with dignity within their pensions. Lib Dems believe in the principle that people are entitled to a certain amount of pension regardless of the amount of contribution they made to that pension.
