Lib Dems and the Environment
The Liberal Democrats, one of the three major political parties in the United Kingdom, is considered to be the greenest, or most environmentally friendly party. In fact, environmental awareness groups audited all three political parties in 2007 and found that the Lib Dems were the greenest party.
The Labour Party placed second to the Lib Dems regarding environmental friendliness, and the Conservatives were in last place, scoring a zero for environmental awareness/friendliness.
As far back as 2001, the Friends of the Earth scored the Lib Dems a 37.5 out of 50, compared to Labour’s 23 and the Conservatives’ 6.5. The Lib Dems have clearly been in the lead on this issue for some time in regard to the UK political system.
The Lib Dems work to ensure the UK takes the lead in the world regarding environmental issues and are pushing to combat global warming through creating a zero carbon economy by 2050. They are also seeking to ensure the G8 countries all commit to lowering greenhouse gas emissions per person, per year ahead of the agreed upon goals.
Liberal Democrats are also dedicated to extending their influence to help the UK lead the world in meeting the environmental challenges that face the world. Global warming, pollution, and wildlife and countryside agendas are also important to the party.
One of the party’s goals is to push for greater funding of research to ensure the UK’s reliance on energy is reduced. Setting a goal for 100% of the UK’s electricity to come from renewable resources is an example of the UK’s green party in action.
