Liberal Democrat Position on Iraq War
The Liberal Democrats have been opposed to the war in Iraq since the UN Security Council first debated the issue about the level of response to Saddam Hussein and his regime in Iraq. Although the World community believed the intelligence reports concerning weapons of mass destruction, the Liberal Democrats in the UK weren’t buying what they heard.
Once troops were deployed, the Lib Dems continued their opposition to the conflict but were clearly in support of the troops. It is an important distinction the Lib Dems made sure to make as they recognized the troops simply are the instruments that carry out the policy that is determined by elected officials.
Nick Clegg, the leader of the Lib Dem Party said that the decision to not withdraw troops was the single worst policy decision the UK has seen in the last 50 years. Clegg went on in his statement calling for the government and the Conservatives to admit their error and apologize to the people of the United Kingdom.
The Liberal Democratic Party of the United Kingdom is in opposition and has always been opposed to what many feel is Britain’s blind allegiance to America and its President, George Bush.
Clegg cited the cost of the decision to support what many Lib Dems have called the American war in the Middle East. He stated the cost has been great in terms of human life, the UK’s standing in the world, an increase in global terrorism, and continued instability in the Middle East.
