Liberal Democrats and Government Reform

The Liberal Democratic Party in the United Kingdom has a bit of a unique position regarding government reform in that they believe the UK should be a federal state made up of England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. The belief is that the power of the UK Parliament should be decentralised and the constituent country’s parliament should become more empowered.

The Lib Dems, as they are called, also believe in a stronger European Union that would have more power over the local country’s parliament. The Liberal Democrats also seek to abolish the UK’s House of Lords and would like to see it replaced with an elected second chamber. The proposed policy states that the new house would elect one third of its members every four years for a one-time only, twelve-year term.

Cornerstone to the Lib Dem policy is the proportional representation they advocate for the House of Commons and House of Lords, giving each member only one transferrable vote. The goal is to encourage the general population to turn out and vote, as everyone gets to have their say in government through the election process.

Lib Dems would also like to see Parliament have more oversight of governmental affairs and bring a separation of powers that they believe would add credibility to the government as well as to Parliament.

Moreover, the party would like to see the people in Parliament replace the sovereignty of the Crown in Parliament, and would also like to unseat the Church of England separating the Church from the government. Find out about the advantages of ssd!
