The Lib Dems and the EU

Of the three major political parties in the United Kingdom, the Liberal Democrats have been the party who have been the most pro European Union. The Lib Dems want the UK to not just join the EU; they want them to play a leading role in the EU.

The Lib Dems believe reform needs to happen for the EU to be more effective. They would like to see many of the powers dissolved and want the policies to be focused on areas that require EU action keeping a veto power for all areas, if required.

Believing the EU needs to reform its Common Agricultural Policy, the Lib Dems also feels all EU institutions need to be more transparent in their business dealings and should be held accountable if they are not, or are found to be involved in something they shouldn’t be.

Lib Dems worked with the other political parties to establish in the United Kingdom a national border agency, bringing together immigration, police, and customs to battle international crime and illegal immigration, as well as terrorism. Seeking to cut illegal workers in the UK, the Lib Dems believe this can be done by regular inspections. They also believe that stiff and just penalties for companies engaging in such practices will deter further promulgation.

Hoping to establish an independent asylum agency, the Lib Dems hope to keep the UK as a place where people can seek asylum but not be guaranteed the right. While leaders of the Lib Dems believe immigration is good for the UK, there needs to be more resources to deal with immigration and ensure proper policy is followed protecting the interests and security of the people of the UK.
